The Department of Elections, City and County of San Francisco, has sent me an explanatory card about ranked-choice voting. The thing that caught my eye is the names and titles on the sample ballot. For example name: Eleanor Roosevelt english: Incumbent spanish: Titular. See the full ballot here.

i am reminded as always that, no matter how bad it seems to get, there's nothing better than being alive. you can thank a god or whatever if you want, but you don't have to thank anything. just don't forget.

I love all of the people in my life.

Correction: February 19, 2008
An article in some editions on Monday about a New York City Transit employee’s deft use of the semicolon in a public service placard was less deft in its punctuation of the title of a book by Lynne Truss, who called the placard a “lovely example” of proper punctuation. The title of the book is “Eats, Shoots & Leaves” — not “Eats Shoots & Leaves.” (The subtitle of Ms. Truss’s book is “The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation.”)

1:30 am - I lack the courage...
...to do the things I should do.
...to say the things I should say.
...to tell the truth.
...to do the right thing.

I can talk about my problems, but I can't seem to do anything about them.

I'm sorry.

Today we made beer-battered pickles. It was actually quite easy to make. First we tried a recipe from the internet that was hilariously off. It called for roughly equal parts spicy seasoning and flour, plus a small amount of beer, and produced a ball of nasty dough. Even with more beer, it was just not tasty, and was quickly abandoned. So we improvised:

1) 1/2 cup flour, seasoned to taste (we used salt, pepper, garlic salt, and some hot sauce, as well as paprika and cayenne, but all somewhat sparingly)
2) Add 1/2 cup or so of breadcrumbs (we used italian, but IMHO panko would've been better
3) Add beer until consistency is reasonable (you'll know, trust me)
4) It wasn't adhering, so I added more flour and beer. Next time might be better to first coat with batter (made without breadcrumbs) and then roll in breadcrumbs or something. Or do a flour-egg-breadcrumb fry instead of beer batter.
5) Coat pickles (we used vlassic dill ovals). Fry in 375 degree oil until golden brown (again, this was fairly obvious)

While we have plenty of room for improvement, they were quite tasty. Incidentally, beer-battered crackers are not really a worthwhile endeavor.

I was going to post a long update on cheap Innsbruck net, because the net in Switzerland was very expensive, but the two guys who run this place are about to have a fist fight. Literally. So I'll post when I get home, which is tomorrow evening. See ya.

11:34 pm - 9/11 changed everything
My favorite statement (see also cool picture) about the Mooninites hilarity in Boston is from the Mayor:

“It is outrageous, in a post-9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme,” Mr. Menino said in a statement.

If you ask me, this is completely insane. They're these cool amusing lights, and obviously playful and not dangerous. Sigh. They were up in 9 other cities and nobody freaked and thought they were bombs. My friend travis found one in SF and took it home. Boo, Boston, you overreact to everything.

1:54 pm - Here comes your man
Say what you will about Bill Clinton, he's obviously not the perfect human being, but his willingness to use discourse in the face of what is essentially media hype and idiocy, is what makes me continue to love and miss him. Intelligence and logic in our leadership, even if I don't agree with them, would be nice for a change. Watch and be amazed. http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/24/clinton-video/

You seriously need to watch this video of Outkast's "Hey Ya". I'm not sure if this video says good things for the guy doing the singing, or for Andre 3000. Probably both.

4:10 am - creativity
Why can't I do something really creative? I don't play enough, I don't sing enough, I don't write enough. I'd like to express myself. You know, in a real language, saying real things. Computer language is creative, to be sure, but it can't satisfy me. I need to make a concerted effort to be creative. I have things to say, I think, but I don't seem to be finding the right venue to say them. Sigh.
